How can I get a negative item off my credit report?

Nope you can’t
You can deny its your bill and that’s why you never paid it. When you get a C.R. there’s a form you fill out to make corrections on your record. Do it there.
You must contact the debtor that has this listed and have them remove it, Disputing it with the agency will do no good.
try to pay it maybe for half you owe. dispute to the reporting agency.
Have you tried calling Trans Union, Equafax, or Experian. They are the 3 main credit reporting agencies. they can have it removed for you. you can google them to find the numbers. I may have spelled them wrong but yeah.. you should try that.
If the collection agency is on the report and it’s over 7 years 180 days, dispute it. They have to remove it.

As long as the company claiming you owe them money continues to attempt collecting the money, it won’t disappear from your credit report. If you owe the money, pay it so they will stop collections. If you don’t owe the money, dispute it with the company and resolve it there, then ask that they remove all negative reports.
Negative items are only removed after 7years if the matter has been resolved. Apparently, this matter isn’t resolved.
if its in collections, it needs to be paid, otherwise it will always be on there. if you do a settlement, paying less than what is owed and the company allows it, then it will show that it was paid off as a settlement, not the full amount, possibly not appealing to some creditors
