How much debt would disqualify you from getting a security clearance in the army?
|
Christopher M wants to know:
Is there an exact amount of debt or is it if you have any kind of bills in collections no matter the amount? I have a couple of bills in collections that equal to about one thousand dollars. Would that disqualify me from getting a secret security clearance from the army? If anyone knows the amount I would appreciate the help.

Yes, bills in collections will DQ you. There’s no fixed amount that they look at. They look at your credit history and current situation.
Dude good luck with that shit, getting a security clearance is a pain in the ass. The DOD shows up and runs a one year background check on you and calls all your teachers you have ever had and talks to all your neighbors and friends and you have to take a polygraph and basically its like the boy scouts club.
If you are not a perfect person, (If you have done any drugs, cheated on your wife, have family in countries where terror is known to have been an issue, or served in the peace corps) Among many things, forget about it.
They’re looking for anything which might be likely to leave you open to coercion by unfriendly agents. In truth, this could be any level of debt which you cannot manage in their opinion.
For instance, if you had a total debt of $1000 with a credit card company, but your salary is $2000 per month, this is perfectly managable.
However if you had an unsecured loan-shark debt of $1000 at 200% interest per month and no salary, they might view it differently.
Best regards.
